22-JAN-2017: Campbelltown GC – Single Stableford & 1st Round Singles Matchplay

OUTRIGHT WINNER: RYAN JOHNSTON (15) 44 POINTS

Do you think your golf swing feels different to last year?

Could it be all the ham and Christmas pudding has deposited itself as extra layers of fat in your body and the litres of swilled beer has left the fat un-metabolized? You cannot you see your feet when you address the golf ball?

Don’t worry, you just met the physical qualifications for membership of Revesby Workers Men’s Golf Club 🙂

Thirty three (33) over-weight players arrived today to play a single stableford event at the challenging, but popular, Campbelltown golf course. In addition, the first round of the singles matchplay started today with 28 players fighting it out to progress to the second round (the top two qualifiers, Claude Poletti and John Varrica, had a bye).

The hot and humid weather experienced over the last month or two has impacted on some of Sydney’s golf courses, and Campbelltown was no exception. Whilst the fairways and bunkers were in reasonable condition, the greens appeared patchy with many divot marks, probably as a result of over-watering the greens to protect them from the heat 🙁

The slow practice putting green is normally a good litmus indicator for the greens out on the course, so expect good scores to be had if they are slow.

Play commenced from the tenth tee (white tees) at a very early start time of 6:15am.

The first three groups went around the course very quickly, however, it was only natural for some of the matchplay groups to be a little bit more circumspect when putting out on the greens.

Most players found the greens slow and bumpy, with many of them complaining about how they kept leaving their putts short all day.

A quick scan of score cards indicated CCR was around 37 points (unofficial), which was not surprising given the slowness of the greens today.

The Outright Winner was Ryan Johnston with a gob-smacking 44 points (handicap 15). Ryan played extremely well from tee-to-green, his iron play being the stand-out. His chipping and putting was immaculate (a chip-in and a couple of bombs with the putter helped his cause). Surprisingly, his matchplay win against Mark McDonald was a relatively close affair.
A rewarding effort for all the hard work on the range!

The A Grade winner went to Terry Coleman, with a sound 40 points (handicap 17). Terry is quickly evolving into a strong A-Grade contender with his consistent performance of late. After winning B-Grade last week and savagely mauling Revesby’s Captain in the matchplay, can nothing stop this juggernaut from further victories. A good reward for a sound swinger 🙂

The B Grade went to Matthew Campbell, with a great score of 42 points (handicap 20). Matt kept it simple and blasted the ball to kingdom come without too much trouble and putted solidly. He convincingly discounted his pensioner opponent, Phil White, and ever the true sportsman, Matt gave Phil a Celebrex ball to ease the pain! A fine effort on home territory 🙂

The C Grade went to Alan Tricker with a solid 37 points (handicap 42) on a count-back from John McDonald. Alan has a lot of ticker, so to speak, to play this hard, hilly course on his damaged undercarriage. Fortunately for him, he elected to travel by cart today and the extra energy he had in reserve proved its worth when he amassed a good score to not only take out C-Grade, but also defeat his tough opponent, Greg Jones, in the matchplay. A thrilling result for the underdog 🙂

The Guzzlers Cup went to John Varrica with a sound score of 39 points (handicap 11). The President is taking advantage of his current good form with the driver, which together with his new remote-controlled buggy, allows him to steer the ball and clubs at will. Mind you, he still needs to check his alignment, otherwise, unforeseen accidents may occur!
Now if only the Guzzlers Cup had a remote control – I’m sure its in the works if I know the President 🙂

The Bradman’s board appears to have a new name on it, specifically, for A Grade. Welcome Adam Shields to the ignominious award, its something that will stay etched in your memory banks forever 🙁

The other Bradman winners are not new, dare I say it, they are becoming institutionalised with it 🙁

Highlight of the Day:
As some of you may remember from previous exploits by the scribe, a remote-controlled buggy is a useful, if somewhat dangerous weapon.

Today saw a probie (namely, the President) trial his new mean machine with a remote. Whilst steering the buggy to the tee on the par5 third hole, the learner driver lost his orientation and steering and drove the buggy into Claude Poletti.
The President quickly learned he should be facing the same direction the buggy is moving when pushing the buttons on the remote – otherwise everything goes in the opposite direction 🙁

A bruised Claude also suggested the President place LEARNER or PROVISIONAL plates on the buggy for the next month or two 🙂

By the way, a claytons matchplay between Claude and John saw Claude the victor (2&1) and bragging rights for a week 🙂
