10-JULY-2016: Hurstville GC – 2BBB

WINNERS: JOY MESURIA & JOHHN VARRICA

WINNERS: JOY MESURIA & JOHHN VARRICA

Its back to the much under-rated Hurstville Golf Course, which is rather surprisingly, the first and only visit this year for Revesby Workers. The rain during the week and overnight left its wet mark on the course, and of the 22 players that showed up, only 19 elected to play. With no motorised carts available, a dejected Rossco, Louis and Freckles withdrew from the competition 🙁

The course layout is well known to the players (except Clifford Bourquin, its his first time on the course) . It is definitely challenging, particularly the front nine (par 37), which is hilly and packed with trees and hazards, whilst the back nine is relatively flat, with fewer trees and more par 3s (par 33).

With few bunkers to contend with and moderately wide fairways, how could you not score a good round? Oh, did I forget to mention the devilish greens?

The greens may vary from small to medium in size and can be extremely fast to slow depending on the season and weather conditions, but don’t expect to have a straight putt on any of the greens.

Starting from the tenth tee at 7:15am, players were happy to hear the Captain, Steve Vaughn, announce prefer-through-the green in view of the damp course conditions.

Being a 2-Ball Better Ball (2BBB) event, players in each group tossed balls to select their partner. The last group consisted of three players, so the “swinger” in that group had two partners on the day, which effectively doubled the swingers chance of winning – or maybe, losing 🙁

The weather was ideal and the pace of play was comfortably quick, with no major delay reported of players going rabbit hunting in the trees (maybe it was duck season) 🙂

After the round, the players convened in the covered outdoor area for a drink and a quick snack. The benign conditions produced 2BBB scores that varied from 40 to 46 points for the ten teams involved. The lower than normal scores were mainly attributed by players to damp conditions around the greens and difficulties with putting on the greens. Judging pace and line was a constant complaint, with some greens quicker than others.

The overall winner was the team of John Varrica and Joy Mesuria with a solid score of 46 points. Both players teamed well under the conditions, with John playing steady to handicap and Joy providing the support. John is out-doing Dawko on the podium visits this year, so don’t be surprised next game if he makes another visit (for the wrong reason). Well done fellas.

The runners-up went to the team of Claude Poletti and Mick McCarney with a good score of 45 points. Again, it was another case of good team work, with both players contributing scores when their respective partner was in trouble. Good to see Mick provide such able support to the in-form golfer with a crook back – congratulations fellas 🙂

The Guzzlers initially went to the team of Steve Vaughn and Jeff Hilder with a score of 44 points on a count-back. However, double-checking the cards revealed that the lanky team of Ian Lindberg and Mark McDonald with a score of 44 points won the Guzzlers (on a count-back). No individual heroics from the boys, just steady golf in the damp conditions. A squishy quenching effort fellas 🙂

It wasn’t surprising to see Jeff’s win revoked, after all, his greyhound dogs were banned this week as well 🙁

The dreaded Bradmans went to the happy swinger on the day. With 40 points, both Ken Little and Clifford Bourquin managed to snare the dreaded trophy on a count-back. Poor Clifford needed a SATNAV to guide his shots around the course today, whilst Ken’s mis-firing putter saw him amass 40 putts for the round 🙁

Highlight of the Day:
As punishment for winning the Bradmans, Ken was ordered by the Captain to do 40 push-ups and sprint a gruelling 800 metres to the 2nd green and back 🙁

When reaching the 2nd green, Ken was instructed to pick up the Eagles Nest pin and tape measure he had forgotten to pick up when in the last group and return it pronto 🙂

Naturally, the Captain being a very understanding and considerate chap, had ordered an ambulance with paramedics to be on standby upon Ken’s return 🙂
