21-JUNE-2015: ANTILL PARK GC-1ST RND 2BBB CHAMPIONSHIP

 ROUND 1 WINNERS A. TRICKER & S. VAUGHN

ROUND 1 WINNERS
A. TRICKER & S. VAUGHN

Antill Park Golf Club is located in the township of Picton at the southern slopes of the Razorback Mountains, about 75 kilometres south-west of Sydney.

Interestingly, the supposedly haunted Clubhouse was built by John Macquarie Antill in 1863 (hence the name of the Club), whilst the town was named in 1845 after Sir Thomas Picton, one of the Duke of Wellington’s generals in the Battle of Waterloo.

Its been just four weeks since Revesby last played at Antill Park, and the frost-bite suffered from that last encounter was still fresh in the minds of many players as they drove into the car park.

Fortunately, another fantastic autumn day greeted thirty one (31) Revesby golfers to play the first of two rounds of the 2-Ball-Better-Ball (2BBB) Stableford Championship.

With players allowed to select their own partner, you can bet the winning pair will have a healthy ration of handicap backed up by plenty of power off the tee and laser guided putting on the greens to boot.

Play started at 8:25am from both the 1st tee (23 players) and the 10th tee (8 players), and with Antill members in front on both tees, expectations were not high for a quick round 🙁

Considering the recent days of rain, the course conditions were very good. The gently undulating fairways were well grassed, but a bit softer than normal, whilst the contoured bent grass greens were still very quick (grhhh).

Avoiding trouble on the water holes (holes 2 to 5), hitting long and high from the tees, avoiding the soft edges around the greens when chipping and no three-putting will be the keys for success today!

After the round concluded, players gradually meandered back to the clubhouse alfresco (not haunted) behind the ninth green for a well earned drink and feed.

The 2BBB scores were mostly in the low 40s, due mostly to the exasperating fast greens whose contours could not be mastered.

There were exceptions, a couple of teams managed to score in the high 40s and above !

In what can only be described as a incredulous performance, el kapitan Steve Vaughn has done an “Austin Powers” and found his mojo to score an individual 48 points, and with his partner, Alan Tricker, managed a 2BBB team score of 50 points to take the Outright winner’s trophy. Alan should go out and buy a lottery ticket 🙂

S.VAUGHN & R.HAMER

In addition to the mojo, Steve was also a “swinger” on the day, and to Rossco Hamer’s delight and good fortune, the pair took out the Runner’s Up trophy with a 2BBB team score of 48 points (on a count-back). When asked what was his contribution to the 2BBB score, Rossco stated he supplied the pencil 🙂

Having taken out the Bradmans the week before with 20 points, Steve Vaughn’s performance today was so miraculous it defies belief, in fact, it borders on sainthood. Incidently, urine samples have been forwarded to ASADA for future reference 🙂

GUZZLERS CUP S.FLOYD & G.McMAHON

GUZZLERS CUP
S.FLOYD & G.McMAHON

With everyone still in a state of shock, the Guzzlers was announced, and the coveted Cup went to the anabolic pairing of Steve “Pink” Floyd and Gary “Tarzan” McMahon (get it? swings from tree to tree) with a very good score of 48 points. Apparently, Steve’s rhythm and tempo was good today and Gary’s new swing coach is an arborist 🙂
Sadly, there has to be a team that scores in a manner that can only be described as either minuscule or microscopic or mitochondrion (in descending order of magnitude).

Bradmans Trophy J.McDonald & J.Hilder

Bradmans Trophy
J.McDonald & J.Hilder

A prize called the Bradmans is allocated to such a team, and today, the specialist team of John McDonald and Jeff Hilder won the Bradmans hands-down with a mitochondrion 2BBB score 34 points. This team has the distinction of being Revesby’s hottest Bradman team, they are the ace of aces 🙁
