19-NOV-2017: Antill Park GC – Single Stableford

OUTRIGHT WINNER: KEN LITTLE 45PTS

We’re now approaching the end of November and seventeen (17) Revesby golfers are celebrating the milestone by trekking to the distant lands of Picton for a game at the scenic Antill Park golf course.

Speaking of celebrations, did you know the Americans celebrate “Thanksgiving Day” on the 4th Thursday of November (it used to be the last Thursday until Congress changed it in 1941) and the day after is commonly called “Black Friday”, the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season in America?

Apparently, “Black Friday” sales send Americans into a frenzy and some cynics believe it got its name because retailers finally start turning a profit for the year, that is, they start coming out from being “in the red” and begin earning a profit 🙂

And with the imminent launch of Amazon Australia just around the corner, don’t be surprised to see “Black Friday” sales enter the Australian vernacular in the future as an event on par to Boxing Day sales.

Now back to golf.

Unfortunately, the Oakdale Challenge, scheduled for today, is no longer an event as a result of the recent demise of Oakdale Workers golf club 🙁

Changing to a single stableford event, the game started from the par3 10th hole at around 7:30am.

The practice putting green was nasty quick, and the fairways and greens looked dry and firm.

The course is not long and the key to success is to hit straight, pace your putts well and minimise collateral damage, particularly the water graveyards on holes 2, 3, 4 and 5, as they can ruin many a good round.

Conditions were very good with just a hint of humidity early on, which was quickly removed when a small breeze kicked in after an hour of play.

Play was very quick on the first nine holes, however, some players lost control on the second nine when their swings started aquaplaning on the water holes 🙁

After the round, the players sat outside the clubhouse patio with drink in hand watching players finish their rounds on the par3 9th hole green. Players on the tee were well aware their game was now under merciless scrutiny, especially should their shot or putt go awry.

Feedback from players after play indicated that the course was in great condition, however, majority had problems judging pace and break on the slower than expected greens, particularly when faced with uphill and downhill putts.

Only seven (7) players managed to better or play to their handicap (36 pts) today.

The Outright winner went to Ken Little with 45 points.
Its been a very quiet year for Ken, with only a Guzzlers in April and a Merv Pell Runners Up in May to add to his golf Curriculum Vitae.

His win today was his first win of the year.

Must have got out of the right side of the bed, because his enigmatic swing clicked into gear today, with his driver smoking like a choo-choo train, his iron play as crisp as the morning air without the rust (well, only one shank) and a putting stroke synchronised to a metronome 🙂

The A Grade winner went to Phil Kilazoglou with 40 points.
Another player whose been off the radar this year.

After a shoulder re-construction early this year, Phil is slowly working his way back into form, with only a guzzlers win in July and a bradmans in September.

Fortunately, he shouldered all other A-graders out of the way today to reach the winner’s podium, at last.

When asked for his secret, he articulated in a humerus (sic) manner that his newly repaired Callaway Clavicle irons stitched together with his Scapula blade putter had become a formidable structure impervious to fear or pain 🙂

His Drive&Pitch and two NTPs were further testimony to his good play!

The B Grade winner went to Rodney keen with 35 points.
Yet again, another player out of the limelight makes a comeback with a win, much to his surprise I suspect.

Renowned for his very hot and very cold play, Rod played the first nine in rock solid fashion, only to come undone with three wipes in a row on the infamous water holes on the second nine.

He managed to steady the ship with a miraculous chip-in birdie on the par4 8th (2nd last hole).
It was no fluke by the way, it just so happened to be his second chip-in birdie on the day!

A rusty but steady performance from Rod 🙂

The C grade winner went to Ken Harris with 38 points.
Its been a good season for Big Ken, if not his best, as this is his 5th C-grade win of the year, only marred by two Bradman wins in September. Most of his wins were at Bankstown (3), but he has shown versatility with wins at Campbelltown and now, Antill Park.

Managing to control his tee shots and keeping the ball in play has been his mantra all year and its paying great dividends, something he is well aware of, being Revesby’s treasurer 🙂

The coveted Guzzlers Cup went to George Lattouf with 37 points.
Talk about another player having a great year, you just can’t keep this mug from getting his mug in the papers.

This is his 6th A-grade win, followed by one outright, two guzzlers and one bradmans.

Its been a terrific season and as long as the dry spell continues, there are plenty of more wins for him to grab.

He had two 4-putts and three 3-putts today and he’s still a contender and breathing very heavily down the neck of Ryan Cassin for the Pointscore leader 🙂

BRADMANS
The dreaded Bradmans today went to golfers well acquainted with this title.

Suffice to say, two of them left straight away leaving the Bradman iron-man, Paul Dawkins, to face the music and wear three pairs of ears simultaneously. Dawko is a brave man with a big heart 🙂

HIGHLIGHTS of the day:
1. Best individual score was 45 points by Ken Little.

2. Mark McDonald made his debut in C-grade today, after being in A-grade early this year.

You may ask why is this included in the highlights package today?
Well, he didn’t get the Bradmans today 🙂

3. Rod Keen managed to increase his birdie tally for the year by 50% today when he chipped-in from off the green twice to grab two birdies 🙂

4. There was only one winner in the longest drives today, that was Denzil Moeke from A-grade (again). Louis Tasaico calls him “Brutus” and suggested we handicap Denzil by making his ball carry extra weight – like they do with the horses 🙂

LOWLIGHTS of the day:
1. Ryan Cassin, The Assassin, may have shown up today, but when he hopped out of his car bending over like he was about to spill his guts, you know he’s not going to have a good round.

As it turned out, he scored a record zero points when he finished the first hole (par 10th) and went home sick (there were some very relieved A-graders when they heard his score).

Why did he show up in the first place?

Well, he’s leading in the Pointscore by 5 points from his nearest rival, so needed to make sure he got his three points for showing up – now that’s what I call a gutsy play!

2. Speaking about a pain-in-the-gut, George Lattouf must have felt very sick after playing the short par4 4th hole. Hitting his 3-wood tee shot near the edge of the lake, George chunked his second shot short into the water.

His 4th shot hit the wooden wall and ricocheted back into the water, whilst he proceeded to shank his 6th shot into the water.

Lucky it wasn’t a stroke round, otherwise George may not have finished his round 🙁

3. Some players had trouble with the greens, the worst being the par5 7th green (third last hole), where George Lattouf and Louis Tasaico managed to both 4-putt.

George was above the hole and went way past on his first putt, whilst Louis was pin-high on the left edge of the green and saw his first putt go left-to-right and run off the green!

Both players left the green in a state of shock 🙁

4. The par3 16th is a short, slightly uphill hole with a bunker guarding the right side of the green. You really can’t get into too much trouble, even if you mis-hit the tee shot.

Well, today saw Phil White hit a tee shot that went so far right (dare I say the word, you know, the SH*NK) that his ball ended up in the backyard of a house on the other side of the road!

I didn’t even know there were houses there to begin with, they must be outside my peripheral vision 🙁

5. What’s the chance two players in a group hit the same tree and find their balls landing right next to each other?

Well, both Louis Tasaico and Denzil Moeke had this situation on the par4 18th (our ninth hole played).

Denzil walked up and identified his ball as nearer the hole and marked it and told Louis the second ball was free to be hit.

Louis hit the ball well and walked down the fairway feeling he still had chance of making par.

On reaching the ball, Louis realised he had hit the wrong ball 🙁

Turning to Denzil, Louis noticed a wry smile on Denzil’s face when he said “I didn’t say it was your ball”!

Golf is a tough game, especially when you play with your best mate 🙁
