5-NOV-2017: Mollymook Hilltop GC – Canberra V Revesby-McKeough/Hogan Perpetual Trophy – 2 Man Ambrose

McKEOUGH & HOGAN PERPETUAL TROPHY: WINNERS -REVESBY

This year saw Revesby Workers hosting the annual McKeough/Hogan Trophy (formerly called the Metal Corp Challenge) against Canberra Labor Club at the difficult Mollymook Hilltop golf course, which is situated on the south coast of New South Wales, about three hours drive south of Sydney.

Built in 1977, the par 72 course features long meandering tree-lined Kikuyu fairways, very large and fast bent-grass greens with deceptive contours, water challenges from creeks and dams, moderate bunkering and the ever-present sea breeze.

The day’s event was a 2-ball ambrose, with a team from each club playing a single match, with the 18-hole nett scores used to determine the match winner and earn a single point for their respective club.

The club earning the majority of match points will win the McKeough/Hogan Trophy.

A large contingent of Canberra golfers (29) showed up to battle the Revesby players (30) for the McKeough/Hogan Trophy. The Canberra golfers were psyched up and ready to avenge their humiliating drubbing last year at Gungahlin golf course.

Starting from the longer white tees (members) on the 10th hole at 6:30am, the Captains advised prefer-through-the-green was the local rule of the day and a minimum of six (6) tee shots were to be selected for each player in the ambrose team.

Length from the tee would be a strong advantage today, but even so, it’s still a thinking course as most of the par fours have severe dog-legs requiring golfers to consider where and how to place the ball from the tee.

After the tee shot, players would often be confronted with balls lying on sloping fairways making iron play to greens more difficult than usual.

If that’s not enough problems, wait till you get near or on the greens! The large greens are very firm and quick and stopping the ball is near impossible. Putting from above the hole will be courting disaster, and don’t be surprised to hear many players complaining about their second putt ending up much longer than their first putt 🙁

With all players travelling in GPS-controlled carts, no players got lost and the game was played in a reasonably quick time, though searching for golf balls in the trees was a common occurrence.

Talk about severe pressure, the last hole (par3 9th) played was situated right next to the clubhouse, so pity the later groups who would come under greater scrutiny from the ever-increasing and vocal group of finished players 🙁

When the noise abated and the smoke had cleared, players moved into the Mollymook clubhouse for a hearty lunch and drinks followed by the presentation ceremony.

With 15 matches on the table, Revesby’s Captain, Steve Vaughn, announced that Revesby Workers had proved too strong for most of the Canberra Labor crew who laboured under the unrelenting pressure to the tune of 11 matches (Revesby)to 4 matches (Canberra). At least Canberra improved from last year 🙂

Special mention must go to Adam Shields for wearing both Union and Confederate uniforms today (similar to that Red Skelton 1948 movie “A Southern Yankee”), he ultimately did the right thing for the Union Army, he fraternised and spied on the Johnny Rebs but kept his allegiance with a victory 🙂

Congratulations to all REVESBY WORKERS players for an exceptional team effort 🙂

The best score for Canberra came in the last group, namely, Chris Christos and Dimitri Markakis, who both managed to score a nett sub-par round of 69¼. A good team effort on such a demanding course, unfortunately, they lost their match to Revesby’s champions on the day, Allen foster and Glen Blades.

Runners up for Canberra by half a shot were Brian Selway and Danny Grassigli with another fine score of 69¾. The pair managed to defeat the elite Revesby pair of Shane Thorn and Terry Coleman by the closest of margins, a quarter of a stroke. Brian’s close victory today should have erased the incredulous loss he suffered last year when a certain Revesby player sank a 30ft putt on the last hole to snatch victory for Revesby by a quarter of a shot 🙂

The best Revesby team score on the day went to the last group (again) comprising two of Revesby’s probies, Allen Forster and Glen Blades, with a superb score of 65¼. New to the event and the course, both decided to play the course on Saturday to get a feel for the layout and boy, oh boy, did it pay off!

Allen started well and bombed his drives from the tees, however, things didn’t start out too well for Glen, he couldn’t hit the ball off the tee and after eight holes, Allen had eight tee shots to his name on the card. That left ten holes for Glen to get his quota of six tee shots.

Whilst Allen kept hitting good tee shots, Glen finally got going on the 9th tee and managed to reach his quota by the 16th hole 🙂

Fortunately, both chipped and putted well all day, the only blemish being a single 3-putt.

If any pressure was felt by them, it was on the last hole, when the pair was faced with a tricky chip from the front of the par3 9th green, in front of a large crowd of Revesby (yaying) and Canberra (booing) players.

With so many eyes bearing down on them and cheering and booing in the background, Glen calmly knocked his chip to 2ft from the hole and then fidgeted for about 5 seconds over the putt before holing out for a tremendous victory – a great win fellas 🙂

The Revesby Runners Up went to the experienced pair of Ken Little and George Lattouf with a very good nett score of 66¾, which was also the best scratch score (2-over par 74). Ken drove well and was the mainstay on the front nine and had eight tee shots selected after ten holes.

Fortunately, George started to get his driving mojo back and managed to get his quota of tee shots by the 15th.
Teamed very well around the greens and putted safely from long distance (only two 3-putts) and managed to grab 4 birdies in the process. A sound performance based on good team work 🙂

The Bradman winners get a literary parole today (names withheld subject to a court order), however, it should be noted that Revesby’s Bradman Ace-of-Aces didn’t disappoint, he got another swastika painted on his fuselage today. In addition, his partner was always in a pickle (hint, hint) 🙁

Thanks must go to all participants on the day for making it an enjoyable and relaxing event and special Bravo Zulus to the social committees and Captains of both Clubs for running the tournament and ensuring it was a great success.

In particular, special thanks to Claude Poletti from Revesby and Les Brown from Canberra for their meticulous planning and organising of the event.

It all went like a project plan for a building construction 🙂
