28-April-2013: Campbelltown GC

2nd Round 2BBB Championship and Final Single Match Play

On a fantastic autumn day, a large number of players showed up to conclude the 2BBB Championship and Single Match Play events. Its been a while since Revesby played here, so every one was keen to have a crack at this challenging golf course. The wide fairways allow players to rip their drives without trepidation, however, the large greens can play havoc with the putter if you are not on your game.

Campbelltown GC is a fairly long walking course with many hills to traverse, so travelling in a electric cart will be an advantage for some players.

Starting from the 10th tee, the players found the fairways in good shape and the greens somewhat slower than normal with the early morning moisture. As the day progressed, the greens started to get much faster and to go around without three putting would be a tall order.

Another problem confronted by the players early on were the ball snatching crows. Our resident wild-life expert, Phil White, says use a yellow ball or spray aeroguard on the ball. To prove his point, he teed up a yellow ball drenched with aeroguard on the 18th hole and then proceeded to snap hook the ball into the middle of the lake – “no crow was going to get that ball” he was later heard to say.

The final of the Single Match Play event was played out today between Ian Lindberg and Steve Vaughn. Both players have played exemplary golf to reach the final, and after the dust settled on the Campbelltown course, congratulations go to Ian Lindberg, our new single match play champion. Ian is a quite achiever, but it is his immaculate irons and putting that enabled him to conquer his many foes.

The remaining major event was the 2nd round of the 2BBB Championship. The Connolly clan (Noel and Mark) were front runners after the first round, and it was a question of who can run them down. Big Noel shot the pins out today by collecting several NTPs and Drive & Pitch, but it was to no avail. They were run down by the indefatigable pairing of Paul Dawkins and Brian Craven with a fine score of 49 points. Congratulations fellas on a fine game to win the 2BBB Championship.

Another noteworthy result was the in-form George Lattouf scoring 37 points out of the 2BBB score of 38 points. They say his partner was too busy counting the number of putts he had on the day (incidently, it was 44 putts).

Worthy of mention was the return of our Captain, Troy Young, to the golfing battlefield. The rust in his armour was evident early on but by the time the second nine came, he was firing with all guns blazing to annihilate the back nine (holes 1 to 9) with seven straight pars in a row – great golfing Troy.

Also note the sharing of a NTP on the 14th hole. The flag stick measurement (witnessed by the Captain) could not distinguish either player’s shot, so it was agreed to share the nearest the pin. Suffice to say Rossco is the better putter as he got his birdie putt 🙂

Like to thank all players for their efforts in keeping play smooth and fast.
