2015 lawson cup (Medium)The Lawson Cup is a annual event between various social golf clubs, namely Mounties, Cabramatta Leagues, Blacktown Workers and Revesby Workers, with each club hosting the event on a rotation basis.

Each club furnishes twenty players to play individual stableford (using their club handicap) and after eliminating the top five and bottom fives scores, the remaining ten scores are added up to represent the club’s score for the event.

Today saw Cabramatta Leagues Club hosting the Lawson Cup at the very challenging Cabramatta Golf Course.

The Kikuyu and Couch fairways and Penncross Bentgrass greens were, as usual, in excellent condition.

The course was well protected, heavily treed and very undulating, it has many tight fairways, water hazards on many holes, sharp angles to some fairways and on top of all that, has very slick, undulating greens guarded by many bunkers.

After an early morning breakfast of bacon & egg rolls at 5:30am, players soon gathered on the 1st hole yellow social tee for a 6:15am start. It soon became apparent that the majority of social tees were pushed back next to the members white tees, which combined with the southerly breeze that was blowing, meant the full might of the course was going to bite into many player’s score.

Players grabbed another free feed of sausage/chicken rolls and drinks after nine holes, and judging by the scores, much energy was expended for very little gain, with some lamenting that it was easier from tee-to-green than green-to-hole.

Some players would see their good tee shots hit close to the flag stick, only to see it take the slope and slowly roll-off into a green-side bunker or off the green, whilst others would putt up a slope only to see it roll back towards their feet 🙁

The second nine offered no respite 🙁

After the round, all the Lawson Cup players gathered in the club house for drinks and post-mortems, and with only four players playing to or bettering their handicap, it became clear the course was the victor and scores, whilst low, would be very close.

It was back to Cabramatta Leagues for a light lunch and many drinks before the presentation.

The Lawson Cup winner for 2015 was Cabramatta Leagues Club, it was just reward for all the hard work they put into organising the event today 🙂

Best individual score on the day was 40 points from Stan Pang [17] and Dean Hayes [27] from Mounties and Cabramatta, respectively.

The most noteworthy Revesby round was 33 points by Ryan Cassin, followed by several players with 32 points (Mark McDonald, Ryan Johnston, Ken Little and George Lattouf).

Many thanks to all the Revesby players for showing up to represent the club today. Whilst the team finished as runner up  by a mere 2 points , it was a definite improvement on last year, so job well done 🙂
