27-April-2014: Bankstown GC-Single Stableford

After the hills and dales of Cabramatta golf course last week, it was a relief for the shank pony brigade of golfers to walk on a flat course like Bankstown. Mind you, scoring wasn’t going to get easier as the course is well protected with many green side bunkers and a smattering of that evil substance called water. Oh, and lets not forget the hundreds of ball sucking trees that get in the way of our unlucky shots 🙁

A beautiful Sunday morning (ANZAC Day long weekend) greeted twenty six Revesby golfers on the 10th tee as play commenced around 7:45am, followed by long delays before the last group (group 7) hit off at 8:45am. With friendly pin positions (location D) in play and the fairways and greens appearing smooth and fast, expectations were high for a good game and score.

Play was delayed by another golf group hitting off before Revesby, and whilst all Revesby players are committed to completing their rounds in a timely manner, the slowness of play was frustrating at best and un-enjoyable and off-putting at worst. It probably affected some player’s game and final score.

It was nearly 2pm before the last players entered the clubhouse for a feed and drink. After reviewing all score cards, it was not surprising to find only 12% of players bettered handicap whilst ball comp winners ranged from 34 to 29 points. Revesby’s handicapper, Stef Suzor, announced CCR for the day was 34 points.

The outright winner trophy went to Phil Kilazoglou with a fine score of 41 points. Kila has been missing in action overseas for several weeks and some suspect he has been fine tuning his game over there. After his practice game on Friday at Georges River when he birdied the last two holes, his performance today was not the least bit surprising. Well done Kila.

The A grade winner went to a relatively new member playing off a 7 handicap, and that was Jack Young with a good score of 39 points. Jack was 2 under the card after nine holes which is exceptional golf. Congratulations Jack on your maiden win and lets hope you can pull all the other A graders up to your standard ! Hopefully, it won’t be the reverse when you get to play with the other A graders 🙂

The B grade winner went to one of the usual suspects, The Assassin (aka Ryan Cassin), who scored 39 points. A solid performance from a solid golfer who more often than not, is mixing it with the winners. If I had to pick a new 2 Ball partner, Ryan would be my go to, can do, will do partner, unfortunately, I’m stuck by contract with a go where, can’t do, won’t do partner 🙂

The C grade winner went to a marauding shark that makes lots of smelly bubbles, namely Rossco HamerHead with a score, and I had to wipe my eyes and read it again, of 29 points. A diminutive score by any standard, I’m sure Rossco is proud of his achievement, to win at no cost to his handicap 🙂 It was a narrow victory, Rossco only just beat the in-form C grader Alan Tricker who had 28 points.

Lastly, the Guzzlers went to another person who has been absent for awhile and is now making a comeback, namely Brad Keen with 35 points. Brad showed lots of potential today with a good front nine marked by some exceptionally long drives from his relatively short swing. His short game, particularly out of bunkers, was immaculate and hopefully, a few more games will bring back the consistency he was showing last year.

Surprisingly, the Bradman scores were horrible, even by Bradman standards. The only extenuating circumstance was Ben Vidler had an urgent appointment to attend, so his score was for nine holes only.
