OUTRIGHT WINNERS M.Connolly & S.Vaughn

OUTRIGHT WINNERS
M.Connolly & S.Vaughn

Another hot and humid day beckoned twenty eight (28) Revesby golfers to the enjoyable Auburn Public Golf Course (aka Rosnay Golf Course) straddling the banks of the Duck River.

Rosnay is very popular with the members, it is dead flat, has little water and bunkers are rare to find. The only impediment to golfing nirvana are the dense trees straddling the fairways and the ball strangling Kikuyu grass rough.

The normally terrific greens were very disappointing today. The greens were slow, patchy and occasionally bumpy, no doubt as a result of “heat-stress” from the last few days of heat and high humidity.

With the rest of the course in good condition, expect scores to be searingly high, particularly those burning with plenty of handicap up their sleeves.

The Captain, Steve Vaughn, was busily arranging the pairings for the initial round of the Singles Match Play Championship starting at 7:08am from the first tee (par 5). In addition to the Matchplay, there was also a 2 Ball Aggregate event, so expect some partners to be mortal enemies on the day 🙂

Play was reasonably fast with players back in the clubhouse in plenty of time to order a quick snack, share a few drinks and conduct post-mortems on their respective match plays 🙂

The winning scores were quickly collated and announced by Revesby’s fearless leader, Steve Vaughn, who coincidently, managed to snare a potent partner to seize the outright winners trophy (on a count-back). That’s right, the heavy hitting King Tiger slugfest team of Hauptmann Steve Vaughn and Obergefreiter Mark Connolly scored a armour-piercing 82 points together. Their fury on the course could not be bettered, even Sgt.”Wardaddy” Brad Pitt was impressed with the devastation they caused with their green tracer shots 🙂

No less equal was the Sherman tank crew of “The Lanky Lefty” and “The Assassin” who took out the Runners Up with a armour-busting 82 points. Both Sgt. Mark McDonald and Master Gunner Ryan Cassin drove and fired their main armament with great accuracy and then proceeded to pick off each hole with red tracer bullets from the various guns in their arsenal. Unfortunately, the King Tiger had better protection and could only be attacked from behind by the Sherman.

The Guzzlers went to the Petrol Tanker team of “Cannonball Express” Ryan Johnston and “Artillery Observer” Ken Little with a gulping 80 points. Ken just sat in the passenger’s seat all day and marvelled at the precision and skills of Ryan’s driving and steering skills to get the rig home without losing a drop of gasoline. His individual score of 46 points was just four over par, a booming effort Ryan (you can have Ken’s share of the Guzzlers as well) 🙂

Another win for Ryan Johnston, and just like Australia’s booming mineral exports, everyone keeps asking – how long will the boom last ?

Bringing up the rear are the grease rabbits who slid to the bottom of the oil pan, namely, Privates Phil Kilazoglou and Ken Harris with a score of 64 points.

Two noteworthy items to report:

Firstly, the play-off for the 2014 Progressive Stableford event between Noel Connolly and Mark Connolly was held on the par-5 11th hole (index 7), and needless to say, everyone could hear the winner when a screaming Mark Connolly scored a 3 pointer to beat his dad. Congratulations Mark !!

Secondly, John Varrica hit a screaming drive on the first hole (par 5) that landed just off the left side of the fairway 40 metres past the fairway bunker. With trusty 3 wood in hand, John gave it an almighty swing to launch the ball onto the par 5 green. John’s eyes were fixated on the sky to track his ball to the green, only to find his eyesight failing to pick up the sub-sonic ball in flight. He finally zeroed in on the ball when he looked down at the ground between his feet, the ball was still there, unmoved and untouched 🙁
Ah, just another fun day in golf.
