Metal Corp Challenge CupΒ – 2 Man Ambrose

2014-11-16 13.13.04After convincingly taking out the Challenge Cup last year at Bankstown Golf Course (GC), a large contingent of twenty eight Revesby Workers’ golfers bunkered down at Yowani, Canberra on Saturday in preparation to defend the Cup against Canberra Labor Club at Gungahlin GC on Sunday morning. By the way, Gungahlin is an aboriginal word meaning “little rocky hill”.

With ominous rain clouds hanging around on Saturday and heavy rains predicted for Sunday, Revesby players prepared for the match using tried and proven methods to hone their mental toughness at either the race track or casino.
A small number elected to practice at Yowani GC, only to find their confidence and swing in total disarray after nine holes of torture πŸ™

Those suffering severe depression from the golf or races sought solace by gorging on Chinese or Thai food that night, whilst some sought fame and fortune at the casino. It would be a long night for most, with bleary eyes, headaches and empty wallets the order of the next morning.

As the tired Revesby players dragged themselves out of bed around 5:30 am on a drizzling Sunday morning, a bright and chirpy Ossco Hamer-Stein could be heard in the shower singing:

“Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Oh What a Beautiful Day, I’m Feeling So Lucky, Everything s Coming My Way”

With all eyes glued to the heavens and fingers crossed, it was off to Gungahlin GC to battle the Canberra Labor Infidels.
Gungahlin is a very interesting course, with lush rye-grass fairways, many trees, medium-to-large bentgrass/poa greens protected by bunkers and water hazards on half the holes.

Most groups started from the foreboding 10th tee, which was pretty much like the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava, with dense trees to the left, water hazards to the right, cross-fairway bunkers dead in front and murderous cross wind from left-to-right mixed with a sprinkling of rain.

As luck would have it, the sprinkle turned into a drizzle and as the cold wind picked up, it poured and poured. Driving in the carts side-on to the wind ensured everyone was soaked to the skin with teeth chattering from the cold, no matter how much wet weather protection was worn. Eventually, the greens gave up and went under water, making putting an impossible task πŸ™

Some only managed two holes of play, with the majority playing 4 to 7 holes only. The club’s alfresco area was littered with wet golf bags, with everyone inside attempting to dry out and stay warm.

It was rather ironic that the rain stopped and sun came out an hour later. The premature ending of the game meant the rest of the morning was spent with drinking and talking until lunch was served at 1pm.

The presentation ceremony commenced soon afterwards, with Revesby’s Vice-President, John McDonald, providing a humorous and enlightening speech to acknowledge Canberra’s Paul McKeough, who today distinguished himself with the rare feat of having played in every challenge match for the last 50 years. Our hats are off to you, Paulee πŸ™‚

As no matches were completed, Captains on the day, Paul Magin (Canberra Labor) and Claude Poletti (Revesby Workers), agreed the Challenge was a DRAW πŸ™‚

Consequently, as current holders of the Challenge Cup, Revesby would continue to hold the cup for another year (many cheers in the background) πŸ™‚

With so many unclaimed prizes, the Captains decided to pull names out of the hat to determine outright winners, runners-up and ball winners for each side.

The shot of the day came from John Varrica (Revesby) when he eagled the second hole par 4. One of the few groups that started from the first tee, John never saw the second shot go in the hole, but was happy his team finished 2 under par for the day (he was reminded he only played two holes before the rains came) πŸ™‚

The weather was disappointing, but it didn’t dampen the players enjoyment of the trip to Canberra and the friendships fostered with Canberra players. Thanks must go to all participants on the day for making it a memorable and relaxing event and special Bravo Zulus to the social committees of both Clubs for organising the tournament.

In particular, many thanks to Paul Magin from Canberra and Revesby’s Ken Harris (accommodation) and Claude Poletti (all the other bits that make the trip successful) for the time and effort they put into it, it was greatly appreciated fellas πŸ™‚

One last special thank you must go to Revesby’s philanthropist, Rossco Hamer, for his generosity in covering the cart fees for everyone – you’re my best friend, in fact, you’re everyone’s best friend πŸ™‚

Oh yes, and don’t forget the all important BUS DRIVER, Matthew Julian, for doing a wonderful job in transporting so many Revesby scallywags to-and-fro. Russ-the-Bus was very appreciative and finally got off the wagon and let his hair down πŸ™‚

Until next year …
