15-9-2019: LINKS SHELL COVE-RND 1 SINGLE MATCHPLAY CHPS + STABLEFORD

OUTRIGHT WINNER: CLAUDE POLETTI [20] 42PTS

Today’s event was the first round of the single matchplay championship or the ” Cock of the walk” as it otherwise called. Due to insufficient numbers and the unavailability of many players to commit to all rounds, it was decided at the last general meeting that the event would be contested by the top 16 players on last year’s pointscore list instead of the top 32.

With the golf course being some one and a bit hours away from Sydney and a tee time scheduled for 6am, most of the eager golfers would have to get up at around 3:30am to have a hit at this much liked links style course. To make matters worse, it was cold, the wind was howling and the proshop staff were running late and as a result, play did not get underway until around 6:30am.

The course itself was in pretty good condition with lush fairways and not too much rough. Players should read the back of the scorecard at all times and those who did would have known that the Irish Rule is a local rule for this track. This rule is designed to speed up play and allows a player that can’t find his ball in the rough to take nearest point of relief under penalty of one stroke instead of going back to the tee to reload.

The greens were like lightning bar one the the green keepers forgot to mow and approach shots needed to be short of the pins to give players an uphill putt. Some of the down wind and downhill putts could change the colour of your shorts.

The player who mastered these conditions the best was Claude Poletti playing off a handicap of 20 who proceeded to shoot 42 points and with daylight coming second.

When asked about his round, Claude reported that he manged to play steady golf in the windy conditions. Learning from the practice putting green that he needed to avoid putting downhill. Therefore as I only putted downhill twice, I was able tounderstand the pace of the greens and only had one three putt. Highlights of the day were the magnificent birdie on hole 10 (index 1) even though I missed several other attempts. Winning my match play 1 up over Jeff Hilder (Tiger #1) who continually chipped in to win holes but eventually fell short on the 18th. The other matchplay in this group had Graham Dean 2up midway into the second nine and then Kila (Phil K Tiger#2) coming back to be 3up with 3 to go. It was eventually level on the 18th and you guessed it Tiger#2 was down and out at the 19th. The mighty Saints winning both matches must have been an omen as the Tigers lost to Cronulla to miss the semis.
